SOME OF THE SONGS WE SING AT SANCTUARY

Changed

Aaron Niequist

Changed
Simply put, this song is a song of thanksgiving. The climax of the piece is the bridge: “Thank You for this new life, thank You for the invitation”. There might be a lot of words in the song as a whole, but its message is actually quite clear: we really have been changed and are bursting at the seams to sing about it and to share that with other people.

This song can be a challenge, but it's a lot of fun.  Just give some thought to how you're going to teach it and you should be good to go.  The range is wider than other worship music, being over an octave, but is certainly not unmanageable. The rhythms of the melody are actually pretty simple and the chords themselves are not difficult.  Achieving the same feel as Aaron Niequist does in the recording can be a bit tricky, though.  He leads “Changed” from the piano and, if it’s a possibility in your particular situation, that might be the best way to prepare this song. We’ve led it with a guitar and, well, it’s just different. We all got through it, and it was awesome, but it was difficult to settle into a strum that seemed to work well.  The piano works well for Niequist and then a guitar or two as well as some fairly hefty drums would be a nice addition to the more driving parts, especially the quarter note rhythms during the bridge.

All that having been said, this piece is definitely worth working on.  It can be really moving, and fits well in a lot of settings. The song in its entirety could make for a great sending, but even just using one of the choruses in worship could be really effective too.
