SOME OF THE SONGS WE SING AT SANCTUARY

Awake My Soul

Mumford & Sons

Awake My Soul
This is a tune that Mark and Sarah learned and fell in love with a few months ago during a trip home to Columbus. And it ended up being the theme for Advent at Sanctuary this year. Like a lot of the music we sing, this song is super simple. It’s easy to learn, easy to teach, and a lot of fun to sing and play.

All throughout Advent this year, we’ve been using the chorus to bookend other songs. We’ve sung it with Charlie Hall and Louie Giglio’s Prepare the Way, Come and Fill from the Taize tradition, the classic hymn Abide with Me, Gungor’s Beautiful Things, and the bluegrass standard I’ll Fly Away. And Advent’s not over yet.

Because we’ve sung this song so much in the last few weeks, we’ve been able to play with different ways of arranging it. It works great led on guitar, but we’ve also led it with piano. At our mid-week worship services, we’ve played it with just guitar and a hand drum. Sundays we’ve been filling it out a bit more with a full kit, mando, and violin.

We’re trying to interpret it differently every week. And we’re trying to build on it every week so that when Advent is over and Christmas morning comes around, it’s going to be rocking.
