Big Claims

The World's Best Selection of Hyperboles and Over-promises!

Have you ever noticed some of the ridiculous claims people make? I was walking past the Barnes and Noble at Derby Street the other day and saw that picture on the left in the window. "The World's Best Selection of Toys and Games." Really? The world's best? What makes some marketing person at a nationwide bookstore comfortable with the claim "world's best" toy selection? It's a bookstore! And a bookstore that recently carved out half its retail space to peddle tablet computers.

We don't really buy this stuff. It makes us cynical. Or at the least desensitized to constantly being over-promised and under-delivered.

So when it comes to the promises of God, the writing of people of faith, the claims that we make as a community... what sets all that apart from other empty claims of "the world's best"?

Here are the readings for this week:

1 Thessalonians 5:16–24

John 1:6–8, 19–28
